Bovine lameness is a serious issue. It is estimated that over one third of our national dairy herd is suffering at least one lameness incident in any one year, which is usually prolonged. It is a huge welfare concern and has enormous economic significance.

This meeting will inform practising vets about the welfare of cows in housed systems and public perceptions of dairy farming. It will educate vets on how to help their farm clients set objectives and achieve the highest standards of health and welfare in systems using housed dairy cows and robot milkers. The Scottish BVD Eradication scheme gives an opportunity to advance disease control and eventually achieve eradication with full industry commitment.
