Idiopathic Haemorrhagic Diathesis of calves (‘Blood sweating’)
15th October 2009
This apparently newcondition has been observed since 2008 across Europe, with cases occurring recently in Scotland and England. It affects calves (Beef and dairy) under 4 weeks of age, and presents clinically as bleeding through the skin and from injection and tagging sites, nose, mouth and rectum. The underlying pathology is of massive bone marrow destruction occurring some time around birth.
The VLA and SAC are undertaking work to try and determine the cause of this condition, and have asked that if practitioners are suspicious of that they may have a case, to contact their local VLA or SAC laboratory for further details. There is a kit available for ante-mortem blood sampling.
