Brucella Outbreak in Belgium
28th February 2011
At the beginning of December 2010 an outbreak of brucellosis in Belgium was reported to the OIE.
Following the outbreak in Belgium, there were two cases of importation into Britain that were considered high risk. Eleven animals imported from the Czech Republic came through Belgium and were retrospectively tested by serology at VLA. One single animal originating from a farm close to the outbreak was also exported to GB and passed the blood tests done at VLA.
This highlights that brucellosis is on the doorstep of Great Britain and the risk through importation remains high.
