Winter Meeting 2012

Farmers and vets working together is the central theme of this important joint meeting organised by BCVA in association with the NFU. To be held in the new Conference Suite at NFU Headquarters, this meeting will set out the current health of the nation’s herd and the challenges that may face us all in future industry and regulatory changes. Talks will be delivered by industry leaders followed by audience discussion on the issues raised so that both vets and farmers can debate the issues from an informed position.
 
The morning session will look at current activities and future challenges. Initially the focus will be on improving health with the presentation of the first GB Cattle Health and Welfare Annual Report. Following this, the supply and use of medicines will be considered. Concerns about the responsible use of medicines and increased evidence of anti-microbial resistance are resulting in European debate on changes to legislation that will affect use and access to medicines in the UK.
 
After lunch, the session will consider delivery of vet services. Government changes to the delivery of statutory vet services have the potential to affect the livelihood of private farm vets and hence their numbers. The impact of this and the deliberations of the Veterinary Development Council will be an opportunity to consider the vet services needed by the industry in the future, and how they might be delivered. The session will also look at how cross industry initiatives are being developed to assist with the implementation of disease control in Ireland.
 
The final session will look at the work of the levy bodies. DairyCo and EBLEX work closely with farmers on health, welfare and production. What roles do these organisations see for vets and how do we all work together to achieve our aims?
 
Ample time during the day will be given to discussion enabling exchange of views and development of ideas for the future that will improve health and productivity through collaboration between the farmer, vet and other agencies.
