We describe the development of a quantitative risk assessment tool to predict the risk of introduction of five endemic diseases into beef suckler herds, and discuss the use of the tool to develop targeted farm-level risk reduction strategies. The risk tool was trialled by 10 veterinarians on 118 farms in southwest England and Wales, 59 of which received a tailored biosecurity plan on the basis of the risk assessment. This was complemented by serological sampling of approximately 50 cattle on each farm, the results of which also influenced the development of the biosecurity plan.
