J A Willshire, J H Payne

Selenium and vitamin E are essential for dairy cattle health. They both have major roles as anti-oxidants and are
able to act synergistically. Their beneficial effects are widespread and can influence fertility, immune system
function, growth and production. However, selenium has a low safety margin, and selenium toxicity occurs when
the intake exceeds the excretory capacity. This paper reviews the requirements, uptake pathways, diagnostic tools
and control methods available for selenium and vitamin E in dairy cows.
