Incorporating the Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug Meloxicam into the Treatment of Clinical Mastitis Reduced SCC and the Risk of Culling
M A Bryan, S McDougall, R M Tiddy
1. November 2009
This large scale, double-blinded, randomised controlled field trial was designed to test the effect of augmenting
the standard treatment of clinical mastitis with a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory treatment (meloxicam). The
null hypothesis was that cows treated with a parenteral antibiotic (penethamate hydriodide) in combination with
meloxicam would have no differences in somatic cell count (SCC), milk yield, clinical outcomes or culling rate
compared to those cows treated with penethamate alone.
