Farm Health Planning: BCVA Cattle Initiative Project and Health Management for the Future
J M E Statham
1. November 2008
FHP is not a new concept - it has been with us in one form or another for over 100 years. In its current form it
represents a delivery mechanism for the AHWS.
The FHP Cattle Initiative Project (2007/2008) aimed to pump-prime increased uptake of FHP in England.
BCVA supported a project which aimed to 'train the trainers' and promote the delivery of FHP through engaging
veterinary practices. FHP already provides an opportunity for cattle practitioners to differentiate their services
and genuinely make a difference to the health, welfare and production of the herds under their care. Increased
awareness and media interest in the environment and the impact of livestock farming on climate change may
represent a fresh opportunity for veterinary FHP through health management of the balance between food
production, health/welfare and the environment.
