Embryo Transfer - Opportunities for Vets and Scientists

A K Smith
1. March 2009
Embryo transfer (ET) is a technology widely used by cattle breeders around the world. It provides the opportunity for breeders to optimise genetic progression and increase the number of offspring born from different bloodlines within a given time-frame. Beyond the ET techniques involved some of the key factors which influence success are "attention to detail" and good forward-planning of the husbandry, management and health planning of the animals. Herds which utilise ET provide the local veterinary practitioner with an opportunity to extend this advice and health planning from the ET group to the rest of the herd, therefore demonstrating that they can embrace a valuable role as part of the herd management team.
