Taking the Initiative with BVD Control
The Scottish Government is committed to Bovine Viral Diarrhoea (BVD) eradication, and phase one of supported cattle testing and an awareness programme has already started. In support of this plan BCVA has created a CPD meeting in Perth (Date To Be Confirmed), Taking the Initiative with BVD Control, that brings together speakers directly involved in both establishing the Scottish eradication scheme, and those with wide experience of BVD control and eradication.
Given estimates of up to 40% of Scottish farms infected with BVD, there will be challenges for farmers, vets and Government. It is essential that vets are fully informed as they have a key role to play in the screening, decision-making and future management on farm. The aim of the day is to enable delegates to identify a clear strategy for tackling BVD infection with their farm clients, and to understand the requirements of the Scottish BVD Eradication Scheme, with the Scottish CVO, Simon Hall, giving the opening address.
Other speakers are well known for their expertise in all aspects of BVD, and will deliver the current state of knowledge about the disease, diagnostics, disease control measures, and implementing BVD control as part of a health management programme. This includes Richard Booth, who has worked on eradicating BVD across 30 dairy herds in England, and George Caldow who has extensive experience of BVD control in Scotland. Potential problems will be identified by speakers too, with Nigel Miller, NFUS, giving the farmer’s perspective.
